Description

I wanted to use heat set inserts with this model so I wouldn't strip the handle so quickly driving the M3 screws directly into the plastic.  So I made the holes in the handle where the blade is screwed down to larger, and set them at an angle so the heat set inserts sit at an angle and therefore the blade sits flush to the handle when screwed down.

Hardware you will need:

  • (2x) M3x8mm Screws
  • (2x) M3x5x5mm Heat Set Inserts

Tools you will need:

  • Soldering Iron capable of reaching a temperature around 75 degrees Celsius higher than your print temperature
  • (Optional) Heat Set Insert Soldering Iron Tips

If you have never used Heat Set Inserts before, look them up on YouTube.  They are the best thing to happen to 3D Printing!  This guy does a good job demonstrating how to use them.  After the intro you can skip to the 3:10 mark because I've already done the design for you.

Also if Heat Set Inserts are new to you, I do really recommend getting the correct tip(s).  They're super cheap on Amazon (for example) and make the job that much faster & easier than using a regular soldering tip.

If the heat set insert won't sit nicely in the screw hole for you, file the edges of the hole(s) ever so slightly.  You want the insert to just barely sit in the hole snugly for maximum strength and life.

For maximum accuracy, I recommend getting a soldering iron that has a digital read out of the temperature and ability to set the temperature target if you don't already have one.  You don't need the whole soldering station like the guy is using in the video above.  You can get an iron together with all sorts of accessories off Amazon for under $20.  Here's the one I bought and it's fantastic:
