Description
This head is one of many copies inspired by the face of the famous Doryphoros, or spear-bearer, made by the sculptor Polykleitos in the mid-5th Century BC.
The discovery of numerous Roman copies in bath complexes, gymnasia and villas demonstrates that this sculpture type was often used for decorative purposes. The work dates to the second half of the 1st Century AD.
