This is a modular dome design for the SK-Tank. So far I've got some feet, a center platform, a couple of spool holders, and some options for mounting filament runout sensors and badge reels. I've designed for 3/4" and 20mm square aluminum tubing as legs. The previous design for 1/2" tubing legs did not really leave enough room for internal wiring, so I've removed the .stl files for those. If anyone wants them let me know, but I would recommend 3/4" or 20mm tubing.

The dome can be mounted in the X or Y orientation, resulting in different heights (since the angle of the mounts is the same but the printer's dimensions differ). To mount the dome with the legs in the Y direction, the legs should be 184 mm long. If mounting with the legs in the X direction, the platform will sit about 33 mm higher, and the legs should be about 289 mm long.

WARNING: DO securely mount the dome to the top of the frame using M5 bolts! if you skip this, the vibration of the printer and the pulling on the filament spool can cause the whole dome to come off and fall, ruining your print and potentially breaking your printer and setting your house on fire.

This thing offers:

  • A central place for filament to come down to the extruder;
  • Two different mounts for a filament spool holder*;
  • A mount for a badge reel for extruder bundle support*;
  • A mount for a filament runout sensor*;
  • (Coming soon) A Berd-Air pump mount;
  • Integrated wire management;
  • Plenty of holes for mounting other stuff. Want to put a camera up there? No problem.

*Optional.

In future I will probably add mount(s) for filament guides and/or a Bowden (or reverse Bowden) tube, for people that want to put their spool holder elsewhere.

The basic spool holder mount takes two 5 mm capture nuts, and is designed to take a 5/16" or 8 mm shaft. You need two copies of that, one mirrored in the X direction. It should work with butchja's spool holder (or equivalent)...see link below.

The 5/16" spool holder shaft should be cut to around 145 mm if you use the 'long' version of butchja's spool holder barrel which is 130 mm long. I use washers between the skate bearing and the mount to give a little clearance for the spool holder to turn (I could probably model in a little bump out instead of using washers).

For adjustable friction, I've added a simple bail that attaches to the bottom of the spool holder mounts with M3 screws and nuts. Both of those parts have additional holes for M3 screws that you can use to attach rubber bands to pull the bail against the spool edge.

EDIT June 29th, 2021: I've also just added a mount that should work with TheBasicMind's airtight spool holder here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4846507 (sorry, the remix thing isn't working for me so I am just posting this link). This one should be mounted on the end of the platform, so that the platform can accommodate two of them facing each other with the filament routing down the middle. This mount is not thoroughly tested yet, but it should work.

EDIT July 11th, 2021: I added a printable leg, for people that would rather print the legs instead of use extruded aluminum ones. As is, they are sized for Y orientation; if you are mounting in X, they will need to be lengthened to 289 mm, but you can do this in your slicer. These should be printed lying down, with the inner flat faces up and down, so that they can be printed without supports and the layers will run lengthwise. Ideally the part should be installed so the inner flat faces are to the sides, which will put the layers in a vertical plane oriented along the part for maximum strength vs. gravity. There should be plenty of clearance, though you might need to shave off any bumps or elephant's foot. If it's too loose you can print it slightly bigger, or wrap it with tape.

EDIT October 28th, 2021: I added a version of the platform and feet to accept 20mm aluminum extrusion or tubing. I also modified the airtight spool holder mount to make the top opening a bit narrower, and add some corner braces at the bottom to make it stiffer. Enjoy!

EDIT March 10, 2022: I added a few parts for a filament runout sensor mount that pivots in the XZ or YZ plane, and slides in the X or Y axis, on a 4x100 rod mounted in brackets on the dome. This should help keep the runout sensor from binding the filament. To assemble, a) drill out the 4mm holes in the end bracket and pivot to 4mm; b) heat up the rod and slide the pivot over it, then let it cool down and slide it back and forth until it slides easily; then c) lubricate with oil or graphite; then d) put the end brackets on and attach to the dome (it can go above or below, in X or Y orientation). EDIT March 18, 2022: I added a version of my spool holder for mounting two spools facing each other along the X axis. See the pic for how that goes together (you can see the filament runout sensor mount as well in the pic). In this orientation you need a shorter version of butchja's spool holder, so I've included that as well.
