3D model description

The model of a road rail excavator with a grapple, inspired by an Atlas 1604ZW from the early 2000's (a very common road rail excavator in Europe) in 1:87 scale.

This model was designed with FDM printing in mind but some parts are extremely small (parts of the grapple for instance) and you will have better results with an SLA printer. If printed on an FDM printer, you will need a 0.25mm nozzle (or finer) and layer heights of 0.05mm. Another option is to scale up the model.

I modeled all of the joints and then exported different positions of the moving parts which are all included in the .zip file (if you want other angles I can also export them for you).

All the stl files are in the .zip compressed file but I have also included a few of them as .stl's to give a preview (there were too many files to be uploaded directly as stl's)

3D printing settings

I have exported all of the parts for both FDM and SLA printing. For FDM printers, I have used Prusa slicer to orient the parts in the best possible way but, some parts will still require supports. Since SLA printers don't have the same limitations as FDM ones, SLA specific files are in less pieces. Though since I don't have an SLA printer, it is only my best guess at what should work well on such printers. All of the files unmarked should be printed on both kinds of printers.

Here is the list of the parts that you will have to print:

Undercarriage:

  • 1604ZW_subframe_L
  • 1604ZW_subframe_R
  • outriggers:
    • SLA: 1604ZW_outrigger_retracted_SLA or 1604ZW_outrigger_extended_SLA x4
    • FDM (all of these files have to be printed 4 times): 1604ZW_outriggers_1_FDM, 1604ZW_outriggers_2_FDM, 1604ZW_outriggersPads_FDM and 1604ZW_feetCylinder_extended_FDM or 1604ZW_outriggersCylinder_retracted_FDM
  • road wheels:
    • 1604ZW_extWheel_L x2
    • 1604ZW_intWheel_L x2
    • 1604ZW_extWheel_R x2
    • 1604ZW_intWheel_R x2
  • rail wheels:
    • SLA: 1604ZW_railWheelset_SLA_lowered or 1604ZW_railWheelset_SLA_retracted x2
    • FDM:
      • 1604ZW_railWheel_FDM_wheel x4
      • 1604ZW_railWheels_axle_FDM x2
      • 1604ZW_railWheels_FDM_arm1 x2
      • 1604ZW_railWheels_FDM_arm2 x2
      • 1604ZW_railWheels_FDM_cylinder_extended or 1604ZW_railWheels_FDM_cylinder_retracted x4

upper body:

  • 1604ZW_turntable
    • SLA : 1604ZW_UpperBody_SLA
    • FDM : 1604ZW_cab_L_FDM, 1604ZW_cab_R_FDM, 1604ZW_upperBody_L_FDM, 1604ZW_upperBody_R_FDM, 1604ZW_exhaust_FDM

boom:

The split boom design used in this excavator has a cylinder in the middle to angle the top part of the boom. I have exported 3 positions, indicated by the number Y, between 1 and 3 in the file name, 1 being where the cylinder is fully retracted and 3 being where it is fully extended. I have also exported 3 positions for the lift cylinders, the number Z, 1 being retracted and 3 being fully extended.

  • 1604ZW_boomLower_Y
  • lift cylinders : 1604ZW_liftCylinder_upper_L_Z and 1604ZW_liftCylinder_upper_R_Z
  • upper part of the boom:
    • SLA: 1604ZW_boomUpper_SLA
    • FDM: 1604ZW_boomUpper_FDM_L and 1604ZW_boomUpper_FDM_R

stick:

for the stick curl cylinder, I have exported 4 positions, indicated with the number N in the file name, from 1 being the cylinder retracted to 4 being fully extended. I have modeled the entirety of the bucket linkages and its coupler but I haven't done a bucket for it yet so I did not bother exporting multiple positions of the bucket cylinder.

  • 1604ZW_stick
  • 1604ZW_stickCylinder_N
  • bucket linkages and cylinder :
    • 1604ZW_BucketLinkage_sidePlate_L
    • 1604ZW_BucketLinkage_sidePlate_R
    • 1604ZW_bucketLinkage
    • 1604ZW_couplerSidePlate_L
    • 1604ZW_couplerSidePlate_R
    • 1604ZW_bucketCylinder_retracted

grapple :

  • 1604ZW_grappleRotator
  • 1604ZW_grappleBucket x2
  • Bucket cylinder : 1604ZW_grappleCylinder_Closed, 1604ZW_grappleCylinder_semiOpen or 1604ZW_grappleCylinder_fullyOpen x2
  • FDM :
    • 1604ZW_grappleBody_FDM x2
    • 1604ZWGrappleHook_FDM_1
    • 1604ZWGrappleHook_FDM_2
  • SLA :
    • 1604ZW_grappleBody_SLA
    • 1604ZW_GrappleHook_SLA

Alternatively, I have also added the model as a single piece unit that you can probably print in one go on some SLA printers. As well as in a 2 piece design (the bottom part is the undercarriage, wheels, .. and the top part is everything else) which should be a good option for SLA printers. These files are available as separate .zip files
