Trajan was the scion of a family of Italian settlers established in the province of Betique (now Andalusia) in Italica (now Santiponce, near Seville). He acceded to power after having been adopted by Nerva, and married Plotina, originally from Nimes. This innovative iconographic model corresponds to the celebration of the Decennalia, the 10 years of Trajan's reign, in 108.
