Description
The relief shows a procession with Dionysus and Ariadne - the god of wine and Minos's daughter (Dionysus's wife, as mentioned in some stories). They are riding in a panther chariot led by satyrs and maenads making music and dancing. Dionysian motifs were very frequent on sarcophagi from Rome until around 300AD. This slab is a part of the cover plate of a sarcophagus-like grave, found near the Tomb of Caecilia Metella.
