The Indian Hunter is a bronze and polished Rockport granite statue by John Quincy Adams Ward (1830–1910), also known as the "dean of American sculptors". This statue depicts a Native American hunter along with his dog.
The statue was cast in 1866 and dedicated on February 4, 1869 and is one of the oldest in Central Park. It is interesting to note that this work is the first sculpture to be installed in the park by an American artist. Some of the other works of Ward that are installed in the park are: The Pilgrim (1885), William Shakespeare (1872), and the 7th Regiment Memorial (1874).
The statue’s bronze bow was replaced in 1937 and was fully restored in 1992 by the Central Park Conservancy Monuments Program.
There are two files: Indian Hunter and Indian Hunter base. the base files include the entire statue, whereas Indian Hunter is a scaled view of the Hunter with dog.
