3D model description

These stylish trash / rubbish / storage bins with swing lids have been specifically designed to print in ‘vase mode’ to allow for very fast printing and low filament usage, whilst maximising strength.

They are ideal for any engineer, maker, or hobbyist to keep their workspace clean and tidy, and they have been pre-scaled in a wide range of sizes to make them suitable for many different applications.

I have been testing this design for months and found them very useful. The small version is ideal for use in the kitchen for used teabags / coffee pods, the medium version is great for collecting failed prints and filament waste, and the large /X large versions make excellent office waste bins.

Important: Please read the instructions carefully before printing – specific slicer settings are required.

Highlights:

  • Bins available in 3-part versions for use without bags/liners, and 4-part versions for use with bags/liners.
  • Pre-scaled in four different sizes for maximum versatility and easy printing.
  • Three different height options for each scale/size.
  • Very fast printing. The smallest bin, complete with lid, can be easily printed in under 1hr40m on an entry-level 3D printer.
  • Incorporated counterweight ensures the lid remains closed.

Sizes:

  • Size 1 (Small): 70mm(w) x 70mm(d) x 80/105/130mm(h)
  • Size 2 (Medium): 106mm(w) x 106mm(d) x 120/160/200mm(h)
  • Size 3 (Large): 160mm(w) x 160mm(d) x 180/240/300mm(h)
  • Size 4 (X Large) 208mm(w) x 208mm (d) x 240/320/400mm(h)

(The above sizes are approximate and vary slightly between the 3-part and 4-part versions)

Assembly instructions:

  • 3-Part version (for use without bag/liner). Insert the counterweight into the lid (one side of the lid has holding tabs for this), then fit the lid into the main bin using the pivot points. Please ensure that the lid is fitted so that the weighted side sits on the integrated stop tab within the main bin body.

  • 4-Part version (for use with bag/liner). Insert the counterweight into the lid (one side of the lid has holding tabs for this), then fit the lid into the lid frame using the pivot points. Please ensure that the lid is fitted so that the weighted side sits on the integrated stop tab within the lid frame. Once a bag/liner is fitted to the main bin body (optional), the assembled lid/frame can then be inserted into the main bin body.

The larger/taller bin bodies have additional versions which have been split vertically into two parts to allow for printing on 3D printers with smaller build volumes. Where these are available, the filenames have the suffix ‘SplitVersion_BottomPart’ and ‘SplitVersion_TopPart’. Once printed, the top part will simply slide onto the bottom part.

3D printing settings

The STL files needed for each size/version have been grouped into folders (within a zip file) to make it easier to identify which files are required.

All models have been designed to print using ‘vase mode’. Using default slicer settings will result in the models printing solid, wasting a lot of time/filament. It is also possible to print the models in non-vase mode by using zero infill and zero top layers.

A 0.8mm line width / extrusion width is recommended for optimal strength, and the tolerances within the models have been designed for this line width.

I use a 0.32mm layer height and 30-35mm wall speed for these models, as I find this gives a good balance between print quality and speed on an entry-level 3D printer.

No supports or infill are required.

IMPORTANT: The lid frames require an ‘open’ bottom face to function correctly. The models have been designed with a recess included so that most slicers with produce the required opening. However, Cura v5.x will automatically fill the bottom layers when vase mode is activated, so the ‘bottom layers’ setting needs to be manually set to zero for the model to print correctly. This is also the case for the split versions of the bins (top part only). An alternative (better) option is to use a different slicer.

For the Small, Medium and Large sizes, printing in PLA should give sufficiently strong results. For the X Large size, I would suggest printing in a stronger material.

The models shown in the photos were printed using a Creality Ender 3 V2 3D printer and sliced using PrusaSlicer. All have been printed with a 0.4mm nozzle, however, using a larger nozzle size should achieve even faster print times.

Please make sure your 3D printer is designed to work safely using whichever settings you decide to use.
