Vandana Shiva

Vandana Shiva (Hindi: वंदना शिवा) (Dehra Dun, 5 November 1952) is an Indian philosopher, physicist, ecofeminist and environmental activist.[1]

She is director of the Science, Technology and Ecology Research Foundation, based in New Delhi, and one of the leaders and directors of the International Forum on Globalization. Vandana spoke at the World Trade Organization summit in Seattle, 1999, as well as the World Economic Forum in Melbourne, 2000.[2] She is an important figure in the anti-globalization movement[3] and a supporter of the global solidarity movement.[4]

Vandana Shiva is also the founder of Navdanya, a non-governmental organization (NGO) that promotes seed biodiversity, organic plantations and farmers' rights.[1] His work defends the wisdom of traditional practices based on India's Vedic heritage and agrobiodiversity and opposes genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and monoculture.[5][6]

She is the author of several books in her field, among them The Violence of the Green Revolution (1992) and Ecofeminismo (1993) co-authored by Maria Miles, both translated into Portuguese.[7]

Biography

Vandana Shiva was born in Dehradun. She was educated at St Mary's School in Nainital, and at the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Dehradun.[8]

She studied physics at Panjab University in Chandigarh, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1972 and a Master of Science in 1974.[9] He then worked briefly at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center before moving to Canada to pursue a master's degree in Philosophy of Science at the University of Guelph (Ontario) in 1977, with a thesis entitled "Changes in the concept of periodicity of light".[9][ 10]

In 1978, he received his PhD in physics[4] at the University of Western Ontario,[11] with a focus on the philosophy of physics. Her dissertation was titled "Hidden Variables and Locality in Quantum Theory", in which she discussed the mathematical and philosophical implications of hidden variable theories that fall outside the scope of Bell's theorem. She later went on to do interdisciplinary research in science, technology and environmental policy at the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore.
