3D model description

This is a design made purely for entertainment. No, it’s not a trap to catch sandworms. I had this vague idea of a trap that closed, sandworm-mouth-style, around the hand of any unsuspecting victim who tried to take something from inside. I tried a circular scissor linkage, but the geometry didn’t permit straight pin connections at the corners, and I didn’t want to use ball/sockets or bent pins. Then I came across this video of three spherical scissor linkages on a shared hub. So I based a new design on it, and this is the result.

It uses rubber bands to store the energy and has no locking mechanism. An inverted t-shirt can make this look like a cloth bowl, although that will slow jaw closing speed slightly. The locus of the three ‘jaws’ is the surface of a sphere with radius of about 5.25”. Either raising or pressing down on the trigger ring will disengage it and allow the jaws to snap upward and together. They won’t have enough energy to do any harm, so it is ideal for pranking someone.

You’ll need about 300 g of filament, a soldering iron to weld a few pieces together, and several rubber bands.
