3D model description

Update 2019/01/11: Increased the wall thickness of the top and bottom box from 0.8mm to 1.4mm. This makes the boxes less flimsy. I have printed them with 20% grid infill and no bottom/top layers. This makes them much more robust but still alowing you to see the content very nicely.

Being a maker means having a lot of small pieces lying around. Mostly, you have hundreds and hundreds of bolts, nuts, washer or similar hardware at hand. Keeping these little parts organized is troublesome. Sure, there are a lot of organizers and sorting boxes out in the wild. However, having one that is modular, extensible and adaptable to your changing needs is not easy to find.

So why not print one out yourself? A 3D-printer makes it so easy to get the right things for the right use case without having to travel the world to find it. Isn't that the best thing having a 3D-printer?

I designed this modular sorting system over one year ago but hadn't had the time to polish the design since then. Nevertheless, I am using it for the same amount of time on a daily basis and thought: why not share it with you?

So here it is. While still being a "work in progress" it is, nevertheless, a fully functional first set.

The inlays are exchangeable and can be arranged at 90Β° angles. Furthermore, they have fillets between the bottom and side walls which makes taking even small parts out of them very easy. Because the fillets require some storage space, I have inserted it only on specific sides, depending on the size of the inlay. However, because you can arrange the inlays at wish, you can turn the fillet-side the way that is most convenient for you.

Speaking of the size of the inlays: this system has a unit size of 2cm, which is labeled 1u.
Therefore, every inlay edge will be an even factor of this unit thus the number in front of the "u" is this factor.

Note: This project is for inlays of 1u in height, only. I plan to release other height measures in separate projects because also new enclosure boxes are needed then. Otherwise, this project would become too cluttered.

Currently, the following inlays are available:
- 2u 2u 1u (4 cm x 4 cm x 2 cm)
- 4u 2u 1u (8 cm x 4 cm x 2 cm)
- 4u 4u 1u (8 cm x 8 cm x 2 cm)
- 6u 2u 1u (12 cm x 4 cm x 2 cm)
- 8u 2u 1u (16 cm x 4 cm x 2 cm)

Furthermore, a first storage box for the inlays is available which can hold four times three times one inlays.
