Description

Chinese Traditional Ringtoss Game

I'm not sure if there are ring toss games in other countries, but this game is extremely popular in China. Whether it's at night markets in summer evenings, in parks during weekends and holidays, or in large shopping malls, in both big cities and small villages, or even at holiday events organized by schools and companies, you can always find the presence of the ring toss game.

The traditional Chinese ring toss is very simple. It's often a paid outdoor game where vendors would lay out rows of prizes on the ground. The farthest row typically contains valuable electric toys, followed by smaller toys or handicrafts, and at the front, there are usually rows of beverages like cola or Sprite. Players need to purchase rings from the vendor. Initially, the rings were made of willow or rattan, later plastic rings became available. Generally, a ring costs one or two yuan each, or you can get 30 rings for ten yuan. During the game, players stand about a meter away from the closest prize, aiming to toss the rings around the prizes. If you ring a prize, it's yours to keep.

Times have changed, and though the fun childhood moments may have passed, the ring toss game remains popular in China, especially during holidays when it's still one of the favorite games for kids.

My son and daughter, who are in elementary school, also love the ring toss game. They not only enjoy playing it but also organizing ring toss activities. During the blossoming spring, we set up tents on the grass by the riverbank. The children spread out magazines and books they've read and display small toys I printed with bamboo molds. They call out to other children around to join in the ring toss, making it an upgraded version of a flea market. Because if we were just selling second-hand books, maybe not everyone would be interested. But by incorporating the ring toss, even though the essence is still buying a book for a few yuan, the participation is much higher. Isn't it a wonderful idea?

Initially, they made their rings out of cardboard, which were light and had varying sizes, resulting in poor performance. So I came up with the idea of making our own rings. After searching the entire internet and not finding anything suitable, I drew a simple design myself. The ring has a thickness of 4mm and a circumference of 160mm. You can choose the material for printing according to your requirements. I tried PLA and PETG. PLA printing is more convenient, but it's not particularly strong. Although it's not likely to break, it may become more brittle over time. PETG-printed rings are much tougher. I tried various printing modes with bamboo molds, and the differences in effects were not significant. If you want speed, you can choose a thickness of 0.20, which takes about 15 minutes to complete. If you want high precision, you can choose a thickness of 0.12 or 0.08, which seems to produce better results. I recommend selecting 100% infill and a board with good adhesion.
