Description

The idea

The idea of the DIY LED ring was born from the desire to build a functional wearable device that was as small as possible. This model is one of many that I developed looking for a trade-off between size and comfort, without giving up the presence of the LED inside. The dream is to be able to create a model so well made that it can be worn as a commercial jewel.

The “diamond” which is actually the top of the ring, is an offset of the upper face of the main body and is deliberately simple and flat in order to play with the BambuStudio color painting and be able to create mini drawings on it to be illuminated through a contrast of light-dark colors. As you can see in the images I uploaded as example, I used as a base a red-burgundy PLA-CF filament (which is truly incredible!) and a small beveled rectangle in white, which is what will then actually be illuminated by the LED inside.

What's inside?

The electronics inside this device is really basic. The real challenge was to find a battery that was as small as possible to fit inside the body of the ring and rechargeable. To satisfy my needs I sacrificed some old Bluetooth headphones to obtain a 50mAh 3.7V LiPo mini battery. The result was extremely satisfying!
The LED I used is a section of a 5V strip LED, just a few millimeters thick, whose on-off is managed by a mini sliding SPDT switch.

To recharge the battery the smallest solution I found was initially to insert a USB-C connector. Then I chose to insert two magnets 8mm in diameter and 1mm thick, connected to the two battery poles, to recreate a magnetic charging connector in the internal part of the ring, leaving the visible external body as clean as possible.
