Description

The representation of Water-Moon Avalokiteshvara is a particular form of the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteshvara, in Buddhism. This specific manifestation is often associated with Great Vehicle (Mahayana) Buddhism and has its origins in the Chinese Buddhist tradition.

Water-Moon Avalokiteshvara is often depicted standing on a lotus flower, holding an urn (vase) in his hands. The urn contains water from the Ocean of Compassion, symbolizing purification and healing. Sometimes it is also depicted with the moon, hence the name "Water-Moon". The moon represents illuminating wisdom and compassion that illuminates the darkness of ignorance.

This form of Avalokiteshvara underlines the inexhaustible compassion of the bodhisattva, capable of helping all sentient beings. The imagination associated with Water-Moon Avalokiteshvara expresses the idea that compassion is as abundant and accessible as the water of the ocean, and that it shines like the moon to light the path of beings towards enlightenment.
