The MiG-21 (NATO reporting name: Fishbed) is a supersonic fighter developed by Mikoyan-Gurevich. It entered service 1959 and saw extensive use throughout Eastern countries. Having no official nickname, it gained many by its operators. The Russians called it "Balalaika" after an instrument, The Polish “Pencil”, and The Vietnamese “Siver Swallow”. The MiG-21 F-13 is an upgraded variant modified to use the K-13 missile (NATO reporting name: AA-2 Atoll). This specific variant of the Fishbed was used extensively in the Vietnam War. It proved itself a formidable foe going toe-to-toe with the F-4 Phantom. A few countries gain the license for the MiG-21 F-13, China had the Chengdu J-7, and Czechoslovakia had the Aero S-106.
