Description

With the anticipation of the Dune sequel, I thought it'd be a fantastic opportunity to craft a unique gift for my friends.

This creation is inspired by the House Atreides Ornithopter, as depicted in Denis Villeneuve's recent film adaptation.

Available in 256x256 to 120x120 (check details for 120x120) printing plate sizes.

Features:

The model can be displayed in either flight or landed modes.

The parts are designed to fit together with tight fit, eliminating the need for glue. However, given I tunned the fitting with the specific calibration of printer, minor adjustments with a dab of glue might be necessary for others.

  1. Foldable Wings: Transition the wings between flight or landed positions. Be mindful that when fully folded, the weight of the wings could tip the model backward.
  2. Landed configuration: This is the default configuration in the kit so you can display the model without anything else.
  1. Flight configuration: For those who favor a flight display, you can swap out the ramp and front landing gear with the upgrade kit provided in the downloadable file. I recommend downloading the Stand I created for displaying the model as if it's flying, which you can find below.

Recommended Printing Settings:

For optimal assembly, I strongly suggest the following settings, fine-tuned for this kit's precision:

  • First layer height : 0.2 mm
  • Layer height : 0.08 mm
  • Wall loops : 4
  • Infill density : 100%

Kit options:

I designed the kit with printing bed size in mind so those with small printing bed won't have to scale it down :

Standard Kit with Full-Length Wings:

Ideal for a 256x256 printing plate, this version boasts the ornithopter's impressive wingspan.

For X and P series of Bambulap Printer you need for this kit to adjust the printer settings as indicated in the official Bambulab Wiki

Compact Kit with Short Wings:

For those preferring a smaller footprint, this edition offers abbreviated wings, suitable for a 256x256 printing plate.

Small bed Kit:

An adjusted option without wings for printers with a 180x180 printing plate.

Separate Wing Kits:

Choose either the full-scale or short wings to pair with the Miniature Kit for custom wing dimensions.

Individual Components:

Every part is also available separately for those looking to print without the kit aspect or specific replacements.

 

120x120 printing beds

for 120x120 you will need to print indivudual parts without the kit version, you will need to download specificaly those parts instead of those in the general indivudual parts component. Those parts fit diagonally in your plate

  • 120x120_Airframe_main
  • 120x120_Horizontal_tail
  • 120x120_wings_left
  • 120x120_wings_right

 

(yes I got a bit carried away by the fun of designing the kit versions :p)

Took about 5 times to get a successful print. Added some disks to the corners to hold things down. I think the stringers need to be a little thicker to really be helpful.

That is so strange, I notice a lot of siconected part in the kit frame. What printing profile did you use ?

I've tried printing it three times now with different settings including the standard profile to no avail. What made it work for you? I don't have an issue with bed adhesion or the corners of the stringers coming loose.

it was a lot of fun. I noticed i had 2 pieces left over, upon close examination of the kit cards, it seems there are 2 loose stl's that are not actually used, you might wanna remove them from the model :) I published my print profile for printing it with no kit card with PETG also. Hope it helps someone! Thanks for the awesome model!

I think you printed the left and right airframe with no ramp gear interface, those are for the flight version.

hello, it was printed on ratrig v-core 500 and yes it is standing but there was a little bit issue with „clip” design as it not bend as easily as smaller one. it stand even better than normal due to more rigid legs. only problem that the wings are heavy and when they are folded the copter do wheele on back ramp. easy fix just print them with 2 walls and 5% infill

second problem is that I don’t know where to put him, the wings are more than 1,5 meters wide :). I was thinking about mounting it on desert stand but with a twist. I imagine it on wall mounted on desert just like a painting

Printed with Bambu Pla Matte. Incredible art work, well done. Though, I really strugled with the tolerances. Did you added chamfers to help when inserting the pieces ?

I took a Prusa course on 3D printing tolerances and conducted several tests with varying tolerances. I meticulously adhered to the maintenance guide and performed a thorough calibration of my printer and filament to ensure optimal “factory settings” for consistency. I wanted for this model to be assembled without glue, but printer and filament calibration can vary. A friend encountered tolerance issues with his first kit due to uncalibrated filament, but the second print fit perfectly.

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble. Many have successfully used this profile and already posted the result here. Let's figure out what went wrong for you. Often, issues arise from selecting the wrong printing plate in the slicer or from a dirty or greasy plate. I usually clean mine with warm water and soap, then dry it with a microfiber cloth. Which printer do you have?

This print nearly fills the entire plate, and it's typical for the edges to be slightly dirtier or greasier since they're touched more often. A print centered on the plate might succeed, whereas one near the edges could fail. I recommend cleaning the entire plate, verifying the selected build plate in the slicer settings, and trying again. Another potential issue could be a low temperature in the printing area. According to the site tracker for this profile it has been printed more than 40 times without any issue.
