Description

Limits the wobble of the Elecraft KX2 radio's somewhat less-than-perfect VFO encoder. The spacer wraps around the encoder shaft with a very small tolerance and provides physical support against tilting/wobbling motion of the shaft. The goal is to produce a more “KX3-like” VFO feel.

Multiple spacer aperture sizes are provided, so that the perfect fit can be found. Too large an aperture will not provide enough support and too small will cause too much friction for turning the VFO knob.

WARNING: Do not force a tight spacer over the encoder shaft. The encoder is not designed to take a lot of physical punishment. The spacer should drop around the shaft with little friction. Do not force it down.

Instructions:

  1. Print the largest aperture spacer and confirm it fits around the encoder shaft and screws down without too much friction tightly around the encoder base top threads.
  2. Confirm the spacer sits straight and that the encoder shaft turns freely.
    1. NOTE: the spacer is NOT supposed to reach all the way down to the top surface of the radio. There should be about half a millimeter air gap between the spacer and the radio's top cover - this is intentional, as the spacer aligns with the top of the encoder instead of the top of the radio.
  3. If the spacer is too large or too small due to different printer and/or material tolerances, scale the model uniformly bigger or smaller until it screws on nicely to the encoder threads
  4. Print multiple spacers with different provided aperture sizes until you find a one that reduces the encoder shaft wobble and produces the right amount of friction for turning the encoder knob
  5. It is possible to fine tune the “feel” by very lightly sanding or filing the inside of the aperture

The spacer is designed to fit below (inside) the standard KX2 VFO knob.
