Description

Polymaker Cardboard Spool Adapter - Post Edition

One thing I appreciated about the Polymakers Adapter was that it kept the cardboard dust out of my AMS. The one thing I didn't like was that if I wanted to remove and reuse the clips on the outer ring broke off too easily. My solution was to make posts that slide into the filament holes and then add slots to the posts to clip in the inner clip. This will also help not add unnecessary bends to the filament.

Update 02.11.24 - Updated the post tolerances and move the bottom 4 posts slightly, to better align with holes.

Update 02.24.24 - Changed the width by 0.5mm due to a reported issue. This should make any Polymaker spools (Not PolyTerra) made compatible.

Polymaker's Description from the original spool adapter

The Polymaker spool adapter is designed to help your cardboard spools print more consistently by reducing friction and creating a structured rolling surface. The spool adapter clips around the face of the Polymaker cardboard spool and is fixed in place by three small tabs that grab the edge of the spool and a location pin that stops the adapter from spinning. The adapter can help your 3D printer by reducing the rolling friction when mounted both internally or externally on almost every design of the spool holder.

One benefit that the cardboard spool provides is durability. The spool can be dropped off a table without shattering, unlike our previous plastic spools. However, this bends or deforms the cardboard face of the spool leading it to unspool with a wobble. The spool adapter can solve this issue by providing a solid circular rolling surface to interface between the spool and spool holder.

Multi-material stations that have assisted unspooling are often designed with small intricate gears that can get jammed by dust particles after hundreds of hours of printing. The spool adapter can eliminate the problem of dust build up and allows Polymaker spools to be compatible with all multi-material stations, such as: Bambu Lab's AMS or Ultimaker's Material Station. Our spool adapter design is by no means perfect, so we encourage you to remix and redesign it to suit your needs where necessary. This design was inspired by our community so who have already designed and posted many similar rings and adapters.

Very sturdy and fits perfectly sizewise. Unfortunately it cannot run in the AMS. I printed it twice and both times the AMS stops completely. If I removed it, it worked perfectly fine with just the polymaker ASA roll. If I put the spool adapter on it stopped again. It seems to be a little bit too big or wide. The plastic pieces that goes through the cardboard whole also causes filament to get stuck. Many technical issues with this. I tried sanding down the plastic plugs so no filemnt get stuck in them and this removed the risk for filament jams from this but the roll still gets stuck in the AMS. I ended up running just the cardboard roll instead which only really risk failing near the end of the roll due to weight. That is still better.

I'll see about taking some of the width out. I saw this problem with PolyTerra spoolsbut not with any of my standard Polymaker spools.

I made a change that should help you. I reuploaded to the existing profile.

Strength Issue:Came out perfect, worked perfectly until I took it off the spool, to move onto a different one. It completely came apart. I’ll keep using the original one, works without issues.

I actually haven't had much of an issue moving mine if I remove it carefully. I honestly did not design it to be used over and over. They print so quickly that I usually just make a new set for each spool. I do appreciate your feedback. Can I ask if you used my settings and what part broke?

Yes, I've used your settings, and it broke at the join between the side and the top.

That was an issue with their original too. The spool itself is already near max size for an ams, adding the plastic around the spool takes it a smidge past. The amount of plastic that can be wrapped is pretty thin. I will see if I can add a small reinforcement without taking away from the fitment. If you want to beta test that version, let me know.
