Description

This model is compatible with all Ikea BILLY bookcase variants and was tested with many 1kg and 250g spools.

I created this as a quick and easy way to store my filament and display it neatly in my workroom. If you already own an Ikea BILLY bookcase, this will be very cheap to build. This model uses the existing holes on the inside of the BILLY bookcase as mounting holes, you will not need to damage your bookcase to mount the shelves.

You will need some kind of pipe that is stable enough to hold up to 12kg of Filament and not bend.

I used 12mm diameter copper pipe, but I also provide models that fit other common pipe sizes (15mm, ½ inch, ¾ inch). Please download the correct one for you.

Personally I think polished copper looks the most pleasing, but you can also use steel or PVC pipe.

As the shelves use the existing holes on the inside of the BILLY bookcase, you can mount them at any height and as many as can fit in your BILLY variant. If you only want to use part of the bookcase for filament storage you can do so. I can get up to three filament shelves in my half-height BILLY bookcase, with some additional storage space in the bottom, or up to seven shelves in the full-size variant.

I printed mine in white PLA. The brackets are barely visible with the OXBERG Glass doors closed.

BOM (per shelf):

  • two pipes cut to size *
  • four M3 x 16mm screws for the pins.

* (depending on which Billy variant you have. Cut the pipe 2mm shorter than the inner width of your Billy bookcase. For me that's 75.8cm. Try to get it as close as possible as a tight fits helps with strenght. The M3 screws don't fit tightly in the holes on the inside of the bookcase, which is intentional)

Please contact me if this model doesn't fit your BILLY variant or if you encounter any problems, so I can adjust the models.

Have you thought about trying to seal this off and putting a de-humidifier in it?

A comment that if you'd like to (at least somewhat) seal your Billy against humidity, this self-adhesive white silicone weather strip from Amazon does a pretty great job: https://amzn.to/47BranE (remove the rubber bumpers first, if you've already used them.) Add desiccant bead holders of some kind and a hygrometer and you have a fairly well sealed (not hermetic, but decent) cabinet. You could probably play with the hinges to allow the weather seal around all sides of both doors, but that will take tweaking so I haven't tried yet.

Looks awsome. If I can ask what model did you buy?

Thank you. This is the Ikea Billy Bookcase (106cm / 41 3/4" height) with OXBERG glas doors. I believe this combination isn't available in every region, but there are different Ikea glas doors available that look similar.

Modified the design to fit the 400mm deep bookcase. Rather than for spools, I'm storing boardgames. works amazingly, combined with some aluminium tube, makes for some excellent cheap shelves.

This is so cool! Do you have any ideas on how to make it more air tight?
