Description

Summary

These are simple pinewood derby trophies that can be customized for your pack (or company, or whatever).

The base, tire and plaque are all customizable using Thingiverse:

Alternatively, you can download the .scad files and open them in OpenSCAD.

If you want all 4 trophies, there are a lot of parts to print, but they are all relatively simple and need no rafts or supports.

I uploaded wood bases for 2022, 2023 and 2024. If people like this and I keep it up after that, I'll upload wood bases for future years.

Print Settings

The tire is customizable and I printed mine by printing most of it with black filament, then paused the printer when the lettering starts and swapped out for white.

The plaques were printed similarly: Print the first few layers in a metallic filament, then pause and switch for black.

Of course, you could also paint the parts, but I happen to have all the right filaments (including metallic gold, silver, bronze, and copper), so I didn't use any paint (although I did stain the wood bases).

The filaments I used:

  • Amolen Dark Wood Walnut: Wood base
  • Overture PLA+ Black: Plaques, tires, seat belt
  • FlashForge White: White lettering on tires
  • MIKA3D Shiny Silk Silver and Copper: Metal risers and plaque lettering for 2nd place and Safest Driver, wheels, seat belt buckle
  • Amolen Bronze: Metal riser and plaque lettering for 3rd place
  • YOUSU Silk Gold: Metal riser and plaque lettering for 1st place

Post-Printing

The only part that I processed after printing was the wood base. I printed it using a filament that contains wood particles, then stained with a penetrating stain.

Once all the parts are printed, just super glue them together.

How I Designed This

The tires for the trophies in the photo were NOT customized using OpenSCAD. I designed them in Fusion 360 with the PACK 20 text and exported and printed them.

To make the tire customizable, I created a copy in Fusion 360, removed the top line of text, exported to .stl., converted the .stl file to OpenSCAD and added code to make the top line of text customizable.

I would like to see about adding the year to the riser part of the trophy and use the year area on the base for the different dens. Can the risers be added to the customizer?

That's an interesting idea. I really like the clean look of the smooth risers, but I wouldn't mind tinkering with adding text. I'll play around with a few ideas and get your thoughts.

Here's a thought: I've updated the customizer on Thingiverse to allow you to put text on the sides and the back. You could put the Den on top and the year on one or both of the sides. Or on the back, I suppose. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6279894

These were great, made some remix changes to them to get them how I wanted them, but amazing work! Will try and post my remix. Still trying to work out how to get the wheel where it is customizeable and includes the new portion of the trophy that I added. More of a Blender person than OpenSCAD.

Thanks, I'm glad it worked out for you. And, yeah, OpenSCAD is pretty hard to swallow if you're coming from Blender or Fusion 360. Kinda fun to learn, though. In case you haven't come across it yet, here's my favorite resource, in addition to the OpenSCAD documentation: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenSCAD_User_Manual/Customizer

Yeah its tough, trying to figure out how to incorporate my topper and keep the wheel customized, wonder if I can upload a .blend file that I used to make my council's derby version of the wheel that doesn't have the pinewood derby on the bottom. Here is a pic of one of my pack trophies. Uploaded all my files without the topper for now, took the topper from another thingiverse project.

I am looking at the tire a when I download the file into tinkered, it has the Pack 20 already on it. I can't figure out how to remove it or edit it. Am I missing something?

You need to use the customizer on Thingiverse. Click the "Tire" link in the Summary, then click Customize. For more information about the Thingiverse Customizer, go to this link: https://www.thingiverse.com/apps/customizer
