Description

Summary

A 4inch viewport camera obscura. Large enough to be used for tracing scenes with a sheet of tracing paper over the glass viewport. If one just wants to use it for viewing, they can sand the viewport glass with fine sandpaper until it is diffuse.

Notes:

Dark colors are best to minimize reflection in the interior. One can also print in whatever color they like and just paint the interior black as well.

Rotate the camera obscura body to be upright in your slicer before printing, it won't need supports in that orientation

Post-Printing

1. Parts List

1 - Camera Obscura body
1 - Camera Obscura backplate
2 - Camera Obscura lens friction washers
1 - 150mm focal length 38mm diameter lens
4 - M4x16 Bolts
4 - M4 Nuts
1 - 4 inch square mirror
1 - 4 inch square clear glass tile
1 - Tracing Paper Notebook
1 - roll scotch tape

Optional
fine grit sandpaper

2. Assembly

  1. Place the lens in the lens hole and bolt it in place with the 2 lens friction washers and 2 M4 bolts. Hand tight is fine.

  2. Place the mirror on the ramp.

  3. Hand-tighten the second back plate on with the remaining bolts/nuts.

  4. Slide the glass tile into place underneath the back plate and into the rails along the top

  5. Tape a cut of tracing paper onto the glass tile.

  6. You're done. you will be able to see a mirror image (left-right flipped) of the world on the viewport now. If its hard to see, cover the top of the viewport with your hand to block ambient light from overpowering the image. I may design a light cover for this thing later.

Optional: If you don't want to use tracing paper to get an image, you can sand the glass tile before attaching it. This will then work as a diffuser without the need for tracing paper.
