Description

Update 28/09/23:

  • the main profile was split into two profiles to distinguish them easier and to reduce the time displayed on the profile (since the total time from all plates in the profile are added up): new profile names are 100% scale, … and 100% with holes, …
  • some users reported that the original version is too loose and the adapter spins without the spool, thank you for the feedback! I have tested 98%, 99% and 99.5% scaled versions of the adapter and the 98% and 99% are impossible to fit (at least on my eSUN PLA+ cardboard spools). The 99.5% scaled version fits very, very tightly and is almost impossible to remove afterwards but it still fits. If you have troubles with the original (100%) scaled version in the AMS try the new profiles for scaled down versions (99.75% scale and 99.5% scale), I hope those fit better for you :)

Original description:

Simple AMS adapter for eSUN cardboard spools (20 cm diameter). Prints in 5 min with the supplied 0.28mm profile (10 min with prepare time) . Mounts to spool snuggly as friction fit. Can probably be used for any other 20 cm diameter spool aswell. Modeled to be most efficiently printed with 0.28mm layer height profile.

Most of the recent eSUN PLA+ filaments come with cardboard spools. Due to potential jamming, BambuLab does not recommend using such spools in the AMS. I am runing almost exclusively eSUN PLA+ cardboard spools in the AMS and had no trouble so far. However, if you encounter problems here is the quick fix.

A few considerations:

  • If you are concerned that the adapter may rotate without the spool when/if it looses friction, I made a second version with three equidistant holes through which you can attach the adapter to the cardboard either with M3x4 screws or by pushing a bit of cardboard through the hole from the inside of the spool. If you are using screws make sure to use short (max. M3x4), flat and countersunk screws since otherwise the AMS may not be able to turn the spool due to collision with the dividers.
  • Since the eSUN spools are quite large, the adapter needs to be quite thin to prevent the spool from getting stuck at the top cover of the AMS (1.2 mm rim thickness was already too much). This is why the adapter may seem quite flimsy but it is more than rigid enough for normal use.
  • The adapter does not fully cover the filament storage holes and there is enough space to secure the filament as usual

Settings in the include print profile:

Layer height: 0.28 mm (0.28 first layer)

Walls: 2

Infill: 100%

Top/Bottom shell layers: 3, concentric

Filament: eSUN PLA+ white @ 220°C nozzle, 55°C bed, 0.98 flow rate, 0.020 K

no supports, no brim

99.75 % version fits perfectly on my ABS Spool. Unfortunately the spool itself does not fit into the AMS, as the spool is too packed and scratches on the AMS feeder, but that’s not the problem if this model.

Very nice! Great to hear that it fits! Thanks for testing it out with the ABS spools, the problem is however really unfortunate... Thank you for pointing it out, it is very helpful to know for the future!

After printing a few meters it also runs in the AMS. eSun should have made the spool a few millimeters wider…

it can use with normal eSun PLA, IF you have eSun pla HS, you need to in crease to 100.25-100.30% to make it fit perfect.

Thank you very much for the testing and sharing! I totally did not account for the difference with the high speed PLA. Thanks!

99.75 and the 99.50 worked on most of my spools but... I added two pictures maybe there is a solution to make them stronger. I used Bambu PLA.

Hey, thank you very much for sharing! It seems that the print is splitting across the layer lines. I think this could be minimized by printing at a lower layer height to get better layer adhesion. Right now the print profiles are set to be printed with 0.28 mm layer height but you could try to slice the model for 0.2 mm layer height or lower. I think this could improve it. Good luck and let us know if this worked out :)

I noticed that the cardboard had still a little moisture left, so dried the spool again, now the 99,75% is to big. Haha Gonna print the 99,5% one now. Nut it is alway good to have different sizes in case of need ;)

for my esun ABS+ Spool i printed the 99,75% version but it was too small and then tried the 100% version. works friction fit.

The print profile is no longer public
Did not fit my eSUN spool. It was a tiny bit to loose so that the ring rotated, but the spool not.

Oh, I am sorry to hear that :( Have you tried to print from a spool with the adapter with the AMS? I am aware that if you try to move the adapter on the spool manually it feels a bit loose but in the AMS it worked just fine (at least for me). Maybe try a print with the AMS and see if this works. However, maybe there are slight variations in the diameter size which varies from region to region (EU for me) and also the spool batch itself... I will scale the model down, retest it this week and upload a new profile. If you have a suggestion for a potential scaling factor, please let me know. Alternatively you can print the adapters with holes and push some cardboard through, but it is quite tidious especially if you would need to do it for many spools. In any case thank you for pointing this out!

Hello again. I have tested various scaled down versions of the adapter (98%, 99% and 99.5%). 98% and 99% do not fit on my spools at all (see pictures). The 99.5% scaled version barely fits on the spool and is a very tight friction fit. I have made two new profiles with 99.5% and 99.75% scaled versions which should fit more snuggly. If you you want to give them a go, I would appreciate a feedback! Thank you again for pointing the size problem out and good luck! :) PS: I have decided to split the original print profile into two (see description). The two resulting profiles are exactly the same as before but have only one plate. For those wondering, this rating would now correlate to the profile 100% scale, 0.28mm layer, 2 walls, 100% infill concentric ;)

I got eSUN ePLA. I think the difference is minimal (Less than a mm). My Overture spool adapter does fit though.
