Description

Update: 2023-10-01 I had a couple of errors that have been corrected in this update. Several of the sprockets had the wrong shaft dimension. I have updated the .stl, .step files and the .3mf Please delete all the old sprocket files and download the new ones, or use the updated .3mf. Apologies for the inconvenience if you tried to print this.

 

I developed a chain and sprocket system for my Chain Conveyor For Bambu Poop. I'm publishing the chain, sprocket and shaft elements separately for use in other projects. The chain is strong and flexible and all components are print-in-place. Components include:

  • Chain assembly with and without the conveyor top.
  • 24mm pitch (distance between links), 22mm wide.
  • 4 Sprockets 13T, 14T, 15T and 16T.
  • Connector link.
  • 2 Shaft sizes 62mm and 112mm.
  • All files provides as STL and STEP.
  • Bambu .3mf's provided.
  • OnShape customization for shaft lengths and number of chain links. No OnShape account required.

Chain Instructions

Chain sections should be printed flat side down. No supports are required for chains without the conveyor top. I used PLA, 15% rectilinear infill, 2 walls, but almost any suitable material will work

For chains with the conveyor top, some supports will be required on the tips of the conveyor. I used manual/snug supports and SupportW breakaway filament. Using breakaway filament will make the supports very easy to remove.

I have provided 1, 5 and 10 link models of each type. Build your chain to the desired length by joining chain sections together with the connector link.

Sprockets

The sprockets are specially designed for this chain. I have provided 4 sizes ranging from 13 to 16 teeth. Each sprocket size has the option for an 8mm hex or 8mm round shaft. I used an x-y hole compensation value of .05mm, but you may need to adjust this value so the sprocket fits snugly on the shaft.

Shafts

The shafts are designed with an 8mm hex section in the center of the shaft for the sprocket. The ends are 8mm round to fit inside a standard 8x22mm bearing. You can customize the length of the round section on each side of the center hex section with the OnShape customizer. See OnShape section below.

If you prefer completely round shafts, simply create a cylinder primitive in the slicer 8mm diameter at your desired length.

OnShape Customization

I mostly use Fusion360 for my design work, but recently started playing around with OnShape. One of the advantages of OnShape (unlike F360) is that the user does not need to have a copy, or even an OnShape account to generate customized parametric versions.

I have provided links to 2 OnShape drawings; one to customize the shaft lengths and one to customize the number of chain lengths to print.

Shaft Customizer

Follow the link above to open the OnShape drawing. Enter the desired values in the “Configurations” section at the top left of the page. You can change the length of the hex section and the length of the round sections on each side to match the configuration of your project.

Once you have the desired geometry, export the model as .stl, .3mf or .step.

 

Chain Customizer

I have provided models for 1, 5 and 10 chain link sections for both the chain and chain with conveyor top. You can use the chain with conveyor top to build your own chain conveyors. If you need to print a chain with lengths other than what I have provided, follow the link above to generate a model with the desired number of links.

To print a single link without connectors, right-click the “link” body in the parts list and select “Export”. This will export only that body.

Connector Link

Use 2 connector links to join two sections of chain. You can make the chain as long as you like.
