Description

This is a lightbox I made upon request. I made 2 versions of this one because after printing the first version, while i do think it looks better, it was quite the effort and extra materials to install the lights, would have been much easier with Version 2, so i give you the option.

I make these lightboxes with the front being the lid, this accomplishes several things:

  1. Less waste, if you end up with stringing or other imperfections in the face, it's less time and material to re-print.
  2. It's stronger as far as the colours melting together and creating weak points on colour changes.
  3. It allows you to place the light strips around the sides at the very back of the box to allow for more light diffusion and more even coverage.
  4. you can use more colours; you don’t need to have the sides colour (usually black) on the case.

Additionally, I add a full 0.2mm layer of white on the back of the face, this does a few things:

  1. It strengthens the areas of colour separation with a solid layer on the back
  2. It helps to diffuse the light a little better giving more consistent lighting
  3. It fills in small gaps in areas where the model may taper to an area smaller than the nozzle size and that will produce a void which the leds in behind will be very visible through.

I hope you enjoy this model; I will be releasing more as time permits; I encourage requests in the comments and will do my best to accommodate as time permits.

Materials used:

LED Strip - (choose non waterproof, I use 5m black) https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805112069857.html

Controller - (choose 24key USB) https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805742867945.html

You will need to do some soldering to use these components efficiently, I personally remove the wires from the controller and the light strip and solder 4 “header throughole" pins across from the controller to the strip to make it low profile and cost effective.

A design and printing of 10, very happy to be the first time I make a light box for how the final result was.

Awesome design.. I love the Version 1 but I tried to print on the a1 mini so had to make it 75% but unfortunately the tolerances are now too tight to fit the pieces together. Anyway you can make one that would work at 75%. Thanks!

i would suggest just scaling down the face slightly more maybe 1% and re-print, that should fit better, unfortunately fit is typically related to proper calibrated flow, so if you havent done that, it may also help. The fit was very tight as well for mine, that's another reason i made V2

if you want, send me a message, i can cut the design so you can just test print the inset profile and check fitment and not have to re-print the whole face multiple times.
