Description

Is it only me?

I do not know what to do with my fingers. I always need something to play around with. And I always feel the urge to design and print things. Why not just combine both habits?

This is a print-in-place threaded nut & bolt fidget toy. Just rotate the inner ring to let it go up, then rotated in the other direction to let it go down... OK, you all know how a thread works.

The print can be challenging as it has some overhangs inside the the ring that are hard to be cooled. The ring also lays with one single line on the bolt. I fine-tuned the model and the settings for two printers (Anycubic I3 Mega and Bambu Lab P1S) and did a lot of test-prints with different PLA brands: Sunlu Meta PLA, Sunlu PLA+, Eryone PLA, Voxelab PLA and 3D Jake Eco PLA.
For all prints I used the generic PLA filament settings in Bambu Studio.

Print it slowly, no need to hurry. Use a layer height of 0.16mm. 0.2mm layers do also work but then the overhangs are not so nice. Use 3 walls, 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 8% gyroid infill and no supports.
Set the speeds to 60mm/s outer, 120mm/s inner, 60mm/s tops and 200mm/s for all infills. The logo will not be visible on single-colour prints. This print should take about 100min on a P1S and 180min on a I3 Mega.
If you want you can go full colour and split the STL into its single parts. Choose different colours for the bolt, the ring and the logo. If you do not like the logo just choose the same colour / material for it as the bolt has. The logo will then vanish after slicing. A multicolour print needs about 5.5 hours.

After the print twist the ring with a little force. This will break the one single line touching the bolt and you can play around with your new fidget toy.

As I downloaded the .stl, I was not sure if this model works. So I printed first a small test. I tested the connecting point of the screew head and the nut (picture of test object is in red PLA). Oh boy! I was really impressed! After that I started the full print. Many thanks to the designer, Blecheimer for this great idea! This connecting system opens up many new possibilities!

Overall very happy. I was trying to print 4 at a time, and I key getting a layer shift, because of something knocking. I spread them out a little more, and that issue did not happen on the last time I printed it. I did upgrade the captive nut to be 100% infill, to give it good momentum when it is turning. Since I did not print it as original, I do not have anything to compare it to.

Nice piece. Easy to print and fun to use. I didn't even need a tool to loosen the nut.

To add some weight I would've printed it in 100% infil, but the design is really good!
