Description

A bit of an oxymoron isn't it? A Large mini-bulb? The now ubiquitous bulb found on trees, garland, and many other things that have lights for festivities doesn't get much attention when it comes to lamps, unlike it's more classic counterparts the C7 and C9 bulbs. I won't stand for that! Help me bring recognition to the unsung hero of the holiday season and print out one of these lamps.

 

WARNING, THIS LAMP IS WIRED BY YOU.

If you don't know what you're doing please consult a professional. I'd feel terrible for anyone if anyone was hurt doing this.

 

==Materials==

 

PLA Filament (For body and insert)

PETG Filament (for lens)

1x E12 or E26 bulb socket and light bulb (if using E26 make sure it's a lower-watt LED bulb to not get too hot)

2x Wirenuts (I used Wago lever nuts)

3x M4x10 or M4-12 bolts

1x lamp cord

 

==Parts==

 

Body

The body consists of 3 parts: body, cap, locking ring. All three are required. Printing is fairly straight forward for the body and cap, but the locking ring can be tricky. In the supplied printing profile I've opted to flip the ring upside down and support the fillet. It objectively looks worse, but it's far better than the support material getting stuck in the threads.

 

Insert

The provided printing profile has two different inserts, one for E12 and one for E26 bases. You'll only need one, but if you're like me you'll print both and be indecisive about what bulb you want to use. Both inserts are fairly straight forward with both having a bit of support material. I've designed these parts to clamp on the base rather than use the industry standard threaded hollow rod, but if that's your jam in the STEP file there's a one piece E12 insert that uses that.

 

I've done my best to make this design modular in hopes that there may be some cool things that can be done with this replaceable insert system. I've left a lot of room in the body so there should be a lot of room for microcontrollers and power delivery if you're a brave soul.

 

Lens

Like the insert I have provided two different ways to print the lens. The 4th plate contains a very thin lens. If using a transparent filament this will be a very bright lamp, but it should be thin enough to be usable with opaque materials to provide a nice color. The lens on the 5th plate is considerably thicker and as such you'll need to use a transparent filament to get any light out of it.

 

==Assembly==

 

Once you have all of your parts printed, cleaned up and ready to go you should have the following:

  • 1x Body
  • 1x Cap
  • 1x Locking ring
  • 2x Insert halves
  • 1x lens

To start off you'll want to make sure your wiring is good to go. I use sockets that have little pig tails pre-attached, but if your's doesn't make sure you attach the cord before proceeding. To get start you'll want to grab your insert halves and place your socket into it's groves on one of the halves. It should be fairly straightforward and shouldn't have any resistance to mate the two halves together. To keep them together simply slide them into the body. If you use sockets like mine you'll want to wire the lamp cord to the pigtails at this time using the wire nuts. make sure you tie a little knot in the cord right before it goes into the channel to exit the body of the lamp to prevent strain on the connections. Next align the three holes on the cap and body; then lock it down with your 3 M4 bolts. You're in the home stretch now. Flip the lamp right side up and twist in a light bulb of your choice. Follow that up by sliding the lens over the bulb and then slide the locking ring down over the lens and tighten it down. The lens should be held fairly secure.
