Description

When using the external spool holder on my A1, I had two spools fall off during the printer calibration and bed leveling process, when the head would move very quickly it would yank it of the holder, Also amount of friction and squeaking I was hearing when using the external spool holder was quite annoying so I designed this holder to fit in the existing mount with a larger flange on the end of it and 22 mm bearings for smooth operation.

I printed this out of PETG but PLA or ABS would work fine as well, there is only a small support in the middle of the threeaded end that will need to be removed

Parts needed:

  • 3x printer parts (threaded end, spacer, flange end)
  • Factory A1 external mount
  • 1x M4x20mm screw
  • 2x 22mmx7mm bearings (standard skateboard size bearings)

Printing:

  • 4 perimeters/walls
  • 25% infill
  • 0.2 layers were used
  • PETG, PLA, ABS

Assembly:

Step 1: Remove small support material from threaded end

Step 2: Screw m4x20 screw through the threaded end till snug

Step 3: Place first bearing onto the shaft

Step 4: Place 3D printed spacer onto the shaft

Step 5: Place second bearing onto the shaft

Step 6: Screw thread piece onto the shaft using the M4 thread till snug (can be done by hand)

Step 7: Unscrew original spool holder from mount

Step 8: Screw new bearing spool holder onto factory mount (screw till snug careful not to over tighten)
