Description

These Thanksgiving drink coasters are different from my usual design style. I designed them as a favour to a friend who requested them. Now that American Thanksgiving is around the corner, I thought I'd release the files as they might make a nice host/ess gift for someone else.

  • Set of four Thanksgiving coasters
  • Pre-painted and AMS ready
  • Print time:
    • X1C P1P P1S: Fits four to a plate and takes ~2 hours at regular speed
    • A1 mini: Fits two to a plate and takes ~1.5 hours t regular speed

Happy Thanksgiving!

Important Printing Information

  • Size: 95x2 mm
  • Orientation: These coasters are best printed with the design side face down on a textured plate. Both orientations are included in the .3mf file so you can choose the one that fits your needs.
  • Flush (Purge) Values: I've optimized the flush values for my own colours; you may need to recalculate depending on your colour choices
  • Keep it clean: Please make sure your plate is properly clean so details have the best chance to stay put and not get dragged around
  • Slow down first layer: Similarly, I recommend a first layer speed of 15 mm/s. It can add anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes to print time but I find it's a worthwhile trade off as the success rate for a clean print increases.

Print Settings

The .3mf files include my recommended print settings. A lot of these changes from default are due to gap filling purposes to produce a cleaner looking design. If you have a 0.2 mm nozzle, it makes the best and crispest designs but it also takes twice as long to print.

Here they are in detail with an explanation of why I chose them.

  • Nozzle size: 0.4 mm
  • Plate type: Textured PEI (best results; the texture looks nice and allows the filament to squish to fill gaps)
  • Layer height: 0.2 mm
  • Wall order: outer/inner (best for intricate first layer patterns)
  • Wall generator: Arachne (your mileage may vary; I found it filled in the gaps better)
  • First layer flow ratio: 1.1 (I found this gave a better first layer squish and helped fill in gaps)
  • Bottom surface pattern: Aligned rectilinear (if the first layer infill had gaps, this pattern helps hide them)
  • Sparse Infill: 15% Gyroid
  • First layer speed: 15 mm/s (slow to prevent small details from coming loose from the plate)
  • Brim: none

Filament

Display models were printed in PLA with the above settings as follows:

  • Jade White: Bambu Basic
  • Light Brown: eSun
  • Orange: Eryone
  • Matte Earth Brown: Polyterra

About the model

I did not design the graphics in the coasters. I did pay for the rights to use them and spent quite some time to make them 3d printable and optimized for painting. I also printed many tests to find the best slicer settings to create good, repeatable results. Although I'm not required to give credit to the artist, I think it's only fair that I do so. These are so awesome, my in-laws love puns so these were perfect. for anyone else printing id slow the remaining layers down just a tiny bit, I got a little black bleed into the white on mine, but overall these came out amazing!

top 2 layers didn't print

If the top two layers didn't print, it is likely something to do with your printer. A partial clog or a tangle in the spool can cause the printer to stop extruding. Alternatively, sometimes glitches can happen when a file is sent to the printer. An incomplete file can also cause the printer to stop before it is finished. I'd be happy to help troubleshoot.
