Description

I wanted to design a Zelda themed bookend for my wife who loves the legend of Zelda and books. When I found @KoalatyLegalGrey's pencil holder, I knew I had a great mesh starting point to modify into a book holder.

While of course it seemed simple at first.. it took several hours of fiddling to repair the mesh and to get it to behave in a way that was compatible with the bookend design I wanted in Fusion 360.

 

Printing

  • Printed using Prusament's Gentleman's Grey PLA in 0.16 mm layer height, with 3 walls and 10% gyroid infill on my Bambu X1C, taking up nearly the whole bed space. I'm sure 0.20 mm layer height would work as well.
  • You might need to scale the whole thing down slightly if your print bed is smaller.
  • I recommend a little bit of brim, even with PLA, because of the size of the print, and the longer time it will probably take.
  • I refined the model to use very little support for cosmetic reasons, but automatic tree supports/organic supports should work well. See picture for where auto-supports worked well for me. I used the “critical regions only” support button in Bambu Slicer.
  • Zelda tack-on logo prints straight on the bed with no supports in a gold silk PLA filament (no-name brand). Attached with a little hot glue.

Other Notes

  • To top off the design, I added my own contrasting legend of Zelda emblem design in sparkling gold as a separate print that you can glue on easily with a little hot glue (or whatever). This is optional, but I think the contrast with the dark blue-grey color really pops. This is also a great candidate for painting, particularly if you print in a neutral grey-ish color.
  • The model is quite large due to the high level of detail in it, and could probably be remixed down to be less complex. However I opted to leave the detail in and accept that it might slice a little slow given that slicing is mostly a one-time penalty here.
