Description

This is an updated version of my quick adjust vise and desk clamp with a few dimensional improvements and the addition of TPU friction pads for the desk clamping jaws and the bottom of the vise.

Regular vises require a lot of screwing - in and out and in and out as as you go from small parts to big parts. This half-nut vise allows you to lift the screw up out of the nut, quickly slide the movable jaw to a new position, and then re-seat the screw in the nut and tighten as you would with a regular vise. The desk clamp clamps to the edge of your desk or table, and features a ball-and-socket joint for adjusting the angle of the vise. You can also lift the vise off of the dovetail connector above the ball-and-socket to use the vise stand-alone. Finally, I've added grooves in the jaws of the desk clamp where you can insert short lengths of TPU filament to create a higher friction gripping surfaces.

Printing
All part are printed in PLA in the orientations shown with 0.2mm layer height. No supports are needed. I used 4 perimeter lines and 35% infill to keep the vise body rigid. Note that the dovetail/ball piece and the ball locking nut print together as one piece. You may want to use a brim on this part and on the desk clamp body for improved bed adhesion.

Assembly
For the vise, first insert the ball-end of the screw into the back of the movable jaw and then slide the jaw into the center slot of the vise body. From the bottom, insert the wedge piece into the bottom of the jaw, pushing it forward to lock it in place with a friction fit. (See vise-assem.stl to see how this works.) Note that the wedge both holds the jaw in place as well as locking the ball-end of the screw in place. Next, press the vise pads into the holes in the fixed and movable jaws. Finally, cut some short lengths of 1.75mm TPU filament to shove in the bottom slots to give the vise a little more traction.

For the desk clamp, first insert the movable clamp jaw into the bottom ring nut. Then slide this onto the bottom of the clamp body, screwing the nut up along the half-threaded body. Next, screw the ball/dovetail onto the top of the clamp with the top nut. Again, insert short lengths of TPU filament into the slots in the jaws for more friction.

You can then clamp the desk clamp to your table and slide the vise onto the dovetail connector.
