Description

This is a complete redesign of my original dragon egg, started over from scratch. It features much more uniform scale position, and no more warnings or wobbly lower layers! The threading is identical to the original profile.

There are four different versions of the egg:

  • A large threaded egg with thin walls (for printing as-is or scaling up)
  • A large threaded egg with thick walls (for printing as-is or scaling down)
  • A small hollow egg (one piece) for printing as-is or scaling up
  • A small solid egg (one piece) for printing as-is or scaling down

All four designs are included as different plates on one profile.

As designed, the large egg will hold one of McGybeer's articulated dragons. However it's a pretty snug fit, if you are making this for a small child who will want to pack it back into the egg you may wish to print the thin-walled egg scaled up a bit. A print profile for this is included - it's the “scaled to 100mm” profile.

The threads will line up the design perfectly if printed accurately. Some filaments are a bit “stickier” than others, it may take one or two opening / closing attempts to get it to move smoothly - particularly with silk PLA.

If you are printing the threaded version with a dual color / coextruded filament it is crucial that you not rotate the parts at all on the build plate, or else the colors won't line up.

printed the 100mm profile at and am able to fit a 70% cinderwing gemstone adult dragon in there. It’s snug, but fits. I’m going to try at 105% next and I think that will be a bit better for it. But mostly, this thing is gorgeous in this tricolor matte PLA 😍

is the problem that it's not aligning, or will it not screw together at all? also, maybe a silly question but did you remove the brim inside the top half?

yeah removed the brim, it's like the top is a little smaller then the bottom. dosent even go on if I try to force it

Huh. Which version did you print? I'll see if I can figure out what's going on.

There is a problem that one side does not close when fully tightened

did you get any warping when you printed it? off the top of my head, if only one side is having issues it's likely cross threaded or the lip of the top half pulled away from the build plate during printing.

printed out amazing in the dual color pla silk. used a very fine layer height and 50% speed to try and get as glossy as possible finish

Absolutely love this print, great on the A1 mini with a dual filament. Also the pattern on the bottom is really nice touch. Threads well no issues and matches up lovely.
