Description

This is snake scale chainmail, a print in place multi-use flexible fabric. This chainmail can be used from anything from a satisfying fidget toy to an integral part of you cosplay or costumes. This model is strong so feel free to play till your hearts content or weather it to deataile a costume. This model can be colored via bambu studio. For best results use a small layer height, but .2 works just fine. If there are any shapes you would specifically like I'd be happy to make them and upload it as a profile.

 

Measurements

Each side of the hexagon is 7mm in length

Distance from center to center to link the chainmail together should be 13.25mm horizontally, and to get the second row of chainmail is over 6.625mm up 11.5mm. Do not reduce the distances lower than that or the scales will fuse together.

I experimented with a soldering iron for fusing the links together. I am using a microscope to get in close, but you can maybe do it with just a magnifying glass. set the tip temp as low as it would go (500°F) and narrow, bent chisel tip. I cut some of the link on opposing sides to mesh the links and then shoveled the removed bit into the iron and bridged the gap(s). since it's on the bottom, I wasn't concerned with color bleed, but I tried to keep it consistent. It's tedious, but fun to do. just need to figure out a good cut point and then reuse some purge from the printer to refill the gaps. I'm also experimenting with simply burning out a section of the link and bridging since using diagonal cutters seems to impart too much bending motion on the link hooks and they break off. I'll try print some more and then fuse together then show off the results.

Awesome work. Have you tried a 3d pen? I bet you could get some amazing results.

Intriguing model to fidget with. Unfortunately the scales aren’t as smooth as I would like. Not sure if it’s the model or something to do with my printer. (I know three scales popped loose and I’m not talking about those.) Other models seem to be fine. Filament is Flashforge Burnt Titanium PLA.

after looking into your print picture more it looks like your nozzle might have a partial clog or you re running your temps too high. The print I did used the exact profile posted and it came out wonderful. I would double check you are using the right filament profile

I used the profile as is from the Handy app. It may be the profile may not work well with the Flashforge Burnt Titanium filament without tweaking.

i’m a huge fan of all kinds of 3d printed fabrics and chainmails. this is really well made. next chance i get im going to print a larger one. 👍🫡
