Description

INTRODUCTION

This is version 2 of the design backporting all the learnings from the release of EMS 300/350.

The frustration of using VHB tape mounted to a printed piece emulating a DIN rail with yet another printed mount for each of the electronics boards to be installed in the Voron V0.2 got me thinking of an echo-system to address this need.

THE DESIGN

The design consist of a hex cut out board mounted directly to the rear extrusions with 4 screws. The electronic/cable duct mounts  come into play after the board is installed. To do this, you will need to download and print the mounts along with a pair of bolt-ons for the boards you intend to use. There is also a cable management module created to help manage wiring (especially the long stepper motor wires). There are 2 versions of the cable management lid depending if you intend to use the expansion board or not.

Do let me know which boards you intend to use and I will be publishing a library of mounts that will work across the EMS ecosystem.

BOM

This model will need to be printed on a bed capable of printing 226mm x 124mm. The parts are recommended to be printed in ABS or ASA since the V0.2 is an enclosed printer and the chamber will get hot. All parts are oriented correctly to just slice and print. No supports are required.

Additional parts necessary are as follows: -

  1. 4 x M3x12 BHCS screws to mount the frame to the extrusions.
  2. 8 x M2 self tapping screws (4 per controller board assuming you are using a SKR Pico and Pi combination).
  3. 10 x heatset inserts for the 2 boards and cable management duct
  4. 10 x M3x6 BHCS

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

EMS is designed to be extremely flexible as to let the user decide what hardware to use on the printer. Therefore we have created a mounts repository where power supply, controller board, expansion board and single board computers (Raspberry Pi) mounts are stored. Please visit our mounts repository to download universal cable ducts and mounts for the hardware you intend to install - https://www.printables.com/model/558357-ft-ems-mounts-repository

  1. Prepare the parts by inserting the heat set inserts to the following parts: -
    1. 6 x heat sets for Mount A's
    2. 2 x heat set inserts for the Cable Duct OR
    3. 4 x heat set inserts for the Cable Duct w Klipper board support
  2. Mount the Cable duct and Electronics mounts to the Frame outside of the printer
  3. Remove the right side panel (looking at the printer from the back)
  4. Slide in the electronics board (you may need to undo the mid panel and lie the printer flat to align the nuts required to mount the board).
  5. Secure the EMS frame with 4 x M3x12 SHCH screws
  6. Mount the electronics boards using 4 x M2 self tapping screws per board.
  7. Wire the printer back up.
  8. Attach the Cable Duct lid
  9. DONE!

TIPS

I built my printer using the FromBot kit and had to make several adjustments. Take note of things to look out for: -

  1. The power/UART connector between the SKR Pico and BTT Pi is too short so I had to make a longer cable.
  2. The wires from the umbilical board to the SKR Pico are too short so you may need to make longer cables to overcome this.
  3. The Z end stop cable is extremely tight but will reach. I ended up just extending the wire to make the cable run look better.
  4. The power wire from the PSU to the SKR Pico was also too short. I have parts to make a new cable for this so that was the option I went for.
