As a starting point I used the 3x3 bin from this post:

Starting file: divider-box-parametric-empty-3x3x6.step

I loaded the above step file into Meshlab, resaved as STL, then modified in Blender (yeah, I know, no longer the preferred step file but on my OS/system and with my skills that worked best. Get over it, I'm a no pro). For modification I stretched the height to fit my thermal roll and then added side cutouts to hold the axel. This perfectly fits the 473 count 4x4.5" thermal roll from UPS online supply store, listed as "Direct Thermal 4X4.50 Label". I plan on maxing a bigger version for the 4"x6" 940-count roll later. I thickened the walls to prevent flexing. I also added a slot to pass the labels through with a pointed ridge to try to allow for easy tearing, but it doesn't quite work the way I had hoped so just use two hands to tear the label sheets. Try to not let the remainder fall within the box.

The axle is just a couple cylinders bool'd together with bevels added in blender.

For the lid (model not included) I just shrunk a magnetic stackable baseplate and added some cutouts to make it use less filament. Really, any 3x3 Gridfinity bottom will work as a lid, so use what you prefer or go without a lid. I may post this modified lid/baseplate later, but it is so thin it flexes more than I had anticipated so I'll probably thicken it first if I do post it.

In the photos, it is not intended to be multi-color but I was using up the last of some old ugly seldom used rolls none of which had enough on their own to do a complete print.

Ideas for future improvements/remixes by myself or anyone willing to take a stab at it:

  • Reshape and possibly reposition the slot to allow easier tearing and reduce the chance that the remainder will retreat back into the box.

  • Create more axles that allow for different hub diameters of various label rolls.

  • Thicken walls further, at least under the cutouts, to reduce flexing so as the roll's axle does not fall into the box.

  • Create a better lid, or just forget it and let the user figure out a different baseplate or lid to use.

  • Reshape the axle to allow for vase-mode printing.
