Description

Never struggle to apply electrical tape to your spools again! So satisfying to use, too!

Bambu Lab says never to use cardboard spools in your AMS due to the damage and inconvenience it can cause. But we all know some of the best filaments come on those darn spools! You may have tried printing spools and spool adapters, only to have them not work on every filament brand… Why keep all those spools and adapters around when you can just apply electrical tape* to the edges?

Here's a SPOOL TOOL that you can use to apply your AMS-saving tape perfectly to every single spool! Also, never lose the end of your tape again! Just slap a roll into this convenient dispenser so it's ready when you need it!

Apply the tape perfectly every time!

And finally, it's so easy to replace the tape!

Notes:

  • If you have this electrical tape* (my favorite) or one with an ID of ~29-32mm, you can print the “adapter” (second build plate). This is because I had to adjust the dimensions to support other tapes, such as this one* for V2. Most tapes should still work; some just fit more snugly with the adapter.

Gridfinity user? Keep your SPOOL TOOL at arm's reach with this 2x2 bin!

Love this model? Here are some ways to support my work:

Change Notes

  • SPOOL TOOL V2
    • 5/17/2024: Initial release of Spool Tool V2
      • Should now be compatible with a wider range of tapes, added an adapter for tape rolls with larger IDs.
      • Adjusted geometry for easier assembly (tape should no longer get smooshed)
  • SPOOL TOOL V1
    • 5/5/2024: Added notes on expected tape dimensions. No changes to the model geometry or print profiles.
    • 5/3/2024: Re-uploaded uploaded STL as two separate parts. No changes to the model geometry or print profile. Renamed to “SPOOL TOOL”

Quality was good, but didn’t realize my tape had a smaller ring.

What are the dimensions and brand of your tape? I can upload a model for your tape if you'd like to print and try it out.

3M Scotch brand electrical tape "35" is (checked on a brand new roll) ID = 26.39mm OD = 74.15mm Width = 19.05mm I think they are aiming for ID=1 inch, OD=3 inch, width= 0.75 inch. https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b00034627/ https://www.amazon.com/3M-Scotch-Electrical-Coding-4-Inch/dp/B00OGLB184

I have an updated design that should fit your tape! I temporarily lost access to the machine with those files, so I may not be able to post it until Monday. I'll put the link here once it's up.

It printed great and worked great but our P1S AMS had issues immediately with the rolls that were taped so no more taping for us. Still a great design though but I guess our AMS prefers naked cardboard lol.

I'm curious to know what kind of issue you experienced, if you didn't mind sharing.

It was the AMS overload error. It started OK but never got far before it came up. It went back to normal after removing the tape. Now, we tried two rolls but may have put them in the same slot- which could maybe just be having an issue or need some cleaning. It also could be my tape job but I thought I taped them decently. Although I wasn't sure what to do at the end of the line, do you recommend overlapping the tape a little or cutting it flush with the start edge? I overlapped a tiny bit but did wonder if the tiny nub it created would matter. Also, it was old electrical tape from god knows where and when so maybe that didn't help either. I have no idea why it didn't work as it seems like many people have success with it. I didn't even know taping the rolls was a thing until I came across your page when I was searching for a generic tape dispenser so this is new to me. Cardboard spools have always worked fine in the AMS but as we fell more in love with Polymaker filament we figured the tape is maybe the "proper" thing to do now that we have so many!

I also use mainly Polymaker (or Overture, and Elegoo for a cheaper option)! Good choice, imo. I usually overlap the tape by an inch or so at the end, I haven't tried it the other way.

I have a design for one that supports slightly larger tape roles, but may not be able to post it until next week. I'll put the link here once I have it up! Cheers!

I just posted a V2 which may accommodate your roll. If you try it out and still have issues, let me know!

This has been the best printable discovery for me. I have so many cardboard spools to get through and I struggle with adapters and skids.

Amazing! Prints and works perfectly. It takes a few tries to get your taping technique (or at least it did for me), but this little spool is a game-changer!
