Description

This is a die with 60 congruent faces and a matching holder. The die is based on the pentagonal hexecontahedron, a Catalan solid which means it is face-transitive (all it's faces are the same).

Use cases

(Mtg) Life Counter

You can use this die to keep track of your life, for example in a mtg commander game. The advantage of this print is, that you only have to use one die in order to display your remaining life count, rather than up to three D20s for a life gain deck.

To keep track of your points, put the D60 into the mould in the holder. Align the side facing up with the shape of the holder (see image). The die is sorted so you can go from sixty to one without having to cross more than one edge per point.

1-60 Randomizer

This D60 also works as a regular die to randomly determine a number between one and sixty because all the faces are equaly equally sized and shaped, at least in theory. To make your die as random as possible, you should very carefully remove all of the supports and print with the same top and bottom thickness.

One peculiarity about this die is, that if it rests on the table, laying on one side, there is no side facing straight up (see image). But you can tell wich face is the closest to horizontal and just take that number.

Printing

Orientation

Print the die with one side flat on the print bed, optimally a side which has no “4”, “6”, “8” or “9” (numbers with higher detail) on it, because it makes the first layer a lot easier.

Quality

You can get amazing results with a small 0,2mm nozzle and a small layer hight (0,06mm). For reference: The die in the pictures are printed with these settings and are only about 25mm in diameter and thus very transportable. If you want a bigger version, for example to see the numbers better, just scale it up until it is just right for you.

I like the haptics of a die printed solid best because it makes the print feel really high quality. With 100% infill it weighs about 10g (original size).

Supports

Supports are needed to a threshold angle of about 30°.
